How we built, scaled and exited Germany’s leading platform for craftsman services
After a full ideation & validation of 120+ ideas, we quickly built momentum in the market. We started with surface-related verticals and offered customers the ability to directly buy services online. One the craftsman side we managed to save 30-40% of their regular work by the technology built inhouse by our team of 20+ engineers. We built a wide range of technology ranging from propreitary pricing algorithms, partner matching, job planning and project management - to name a few.
Craftsman services have for a long time been a highly fragmented and barely digitized industry. As a consequence, customers were faced with untransparent prices and a risk of low quality services in their home projects. The founding mission of Homebell was to change this by turning renovation services into ecommerce, providing a platform that guarantees reliable high quality work at fixed quotes.
As with any platform business, we had to simultaneously build up the demand side as well as the supply side. Delivering fixed-quote projects as a complete service, created the challenge of productizing and digitizing craftsman business processes. At the same time, building a scalable marketing engine for exponential growth, paired with efficient CAC, was a challenge on the demand side.
Homebell quickly raised funding from high profile VCs (Index, GFC, Lakestar) and was able to launch in multiple markets.After five years, we successfully exited the business to Portal United.
